Saturday Tutorial and a Who Village Freebie

Petra here, aka Sugar& Spice, good evening and apologies for my late post. I’d like to share a couple of techniques with you, which are so quick and effective. I use mainly PSE 5, so the instructions may be different for your programme.  (I used Amy’s latest releases, Who Village Elements and Who Village Papers). First up, is a quick and easy out of bounds.

Place your photo above a square in the template. (I used Amy’s Say it a 100 Ways Template). Click on the small preview thumbnail of the square, in the layers palate. You should see the marching ants on your photo, as you can see in mine below.  Now select your photo, so that it is highlighted as the active layer. Go to your menu bar and click on Select and then Inverse on the drop down menu (Shift + CTRL + I).

Capture1

Using your eraser brush, erase all the areas outside the square, except those you want to have as your out of bounds. A steady hand is useful here. Trim away until you get the required result.

Capture2

Deselect your ‘marching ants’ when your finished (CTRL +D) and re-decorate your page, as you wish. I decided the green background was too dark and changed it to red and pink.

Capture3

My page looks a bit bare and there isn’t really any room for journaling so I decided to make some quick and easy word art.  I used a CU font by That Girl & Darcy Baldwin to bring you a 2nd quick technique.

Write out your word and create a new blank layer underneath. Once again click on the thumbnail of the text to get your marching ants. Now select your blank layer underneath and go to Edit in your menu bar, at the top. Click on Stroke, in the drop down menu. This should bring up a dialogue box, similar to the one below. You may want to change the settings but I used a stroke of 20 pixels, centred and chose the colour of my background paper as a contrast. click OK when you’re happy with it. Deselect your text (CTRL + D) and simplify it. Merge it with your new stroke layer below. And there you go, a quick and easy focal point for your page.

Capture4

And after adding some more bits and pieces, here is my finished page.

SnS-YuleTree2011

And for being so patient, here is a page cluster taken from my page above. It is shadowed but I’ve included the shadow settings in the zip, should you wish to match them to your page.

A Freeibe and An Announcement

I'm back with that freebie I told you I wanted to hand out!  I'm so excited about becoming a designer and opening up my shop SOON that I wanted to celebrate with giving you a freebie!  I made a really great metal alpha for you, but I left it out in the rain!  You know how it is here in Oregon.  Autumn is on the way and so are the rains.  This poor alpha got all rusted. I thought that you could still use it so I am going to give it to you anyway.
LOL !  Smiley

I hope you enjoy the alpha freebie!
The rusted detail looks pretty good here, but it will look even better when you download it and open it up in your program.  It turned out pretty good, and I hope you like it.

DOWNLOAD BELOW:

Have you guessed my announcement?  Where I will be selling?  Did you see the logo on my packaging?  You guessed it!  I am so excited that I will be selling my digi-goods at GingerScraps!  I'm going to be a Gingerbread Lady- woo hoo!  GS is such a wonderful place. The community is sweet and fun, the designers are all talented and creative.  They are adding many new designers to their shop in the next few months so you'll have to check them out!  GingerScraps is a very welcoming place, so if you haven't visited yet you should give them a try!

I hope you like the alpha, and I can't wait to tell you all about my store opening (there will probably be freebies and coupons involved-- if you've read my blog very long than you know how much I love giving out freebies hehe).

I sure would love it if you'd comment here on my blog if you grab the freebie!  I enjoyed making this for you and I would like to hear from you if you download ok?
Thanks!! Smiley

Design Challenge for me FREE kit for you

When I learned that Faith Sisters was having a digi-scrap design challenge I decided to jump in and take part just for the fun of it.  There are two different categories in the challenge.  There is a category for those who are competing for a spot to sell in the Faith Sisters store, and there is a category for those who want to participate in the challenge just for the fun of it.  I am participating just for fun.

I love the blues and browns in the color palette, and what a sweet theme.  If you are unsure about the theme it comes from the song with the same name.

The lyrics are:
Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
They are yellow, brown, red, black and white
they are precious in His sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world.

I went to work right away, and I came up with this...

If you like the kit you can go get it at FS for FREE!  Each one of those children in the kit are individual png's.  I wanted to do more kids with more skin/hair color/hair length combos, but I needed to finish up.  It was a lot of fun to make this kit.  It was also very time consuming so if you go over to Faith Sisters to grab this PLEASE, please, please leave me a comment in the comment section in their gallery to let me know that you are downloading, and tell me what you think of the kit.  The designers who are competing would appreciate your comments too!  One of the ways they are judged on their kits is by their comments.  If you don't have an account in their gallery please sign up so you can leave me a little love.  I would really appreciate it!
EDIT: Since this event has expired you can no longer get this at the site.  Here are the download links...
Elements 1
Elements 2
Paper 1
Paper 2

As I was working on the kit I just felt like it needed an add-on to make the project complete.  Do you ever just have those feelings?  lol!  I had to have cardstock/solids and an alpha, so I made some.  It isn't included in the download at Faith Sisters because... well because those kits are supposed to be mini-kits!  If you want the cardstock and alpha add-on you can grab it here for free on my blog.  The alpha is still in a png sheet and not cut apart, but it is complete with upper case, lower case, numbers, and a bunch of symbols (if you need help with the un-cut alpha let me know in the comments).

Here is the add-on...
There are two downloads so be sure to grab them both:

Thank you and I hope you enjoy my designs and the Faith Sisters design challenge!

Are you on board for the free templates?

If you are stopping by for the Sarah Bennett CT Blog Train then welcome aboard!  The train officially starts on Wednesday the 28th at 8am Mountain (I'm posting this a little early).

It has been awesome working with the talented and fun Sarah and her beautiful designs.  Her design skills will be missed in the Scrap Matters community, but the items that she currently has in her store (unless it is a SM collab) are all 50% off!  You really need to go fill up your shopping cart with her goodies before they are GONE on the 31st of this month.

If you arrive on any of the stops along the way and discover that a free template post hasn't been made yet, please be patient and try back later.  I know that all the train contributors have beautiful templates because I've seen them all in the CT forum.

You should have arrived here from Amanda's blog.

and in case you get lost here is the Train Itinerary:
CT Blog:  http://designsbysarahbennett.blogspot.com/
Katie: http://scrappingwithkatie.blogspot.com/
Amanda: http://mandasmemories.blogspot.com/
AmyP: http://amyp-unforgettablemoments.blogspot.com/     <---- YOU ARE HERE
Britanee: http://britaneesscraps.blogspot.com/
Janine: http://digitalscrappinrocks.blogspot.com/
AmyM: http://melniczenkomusings.blogspot.com/

Thank you Sarah for a fun time on your CT and good luck as you move forward!
(I'm glad that Sarah will still be around digi-land as a scrapper!)

Here is my contribution to the template blog train...

The little hinges in the template were compliments of Gunhild Storeide's CU generosity.  Most of the items on the template are pre-shadowed.  If you want to keep the shadows than just simply keep them.  If you would prefer to add your own shadow just delete the layer style.  The download includes a PSD, a TIFF, and some PNG files.

Click on the preview below to download the template from 4shared (please just click through any annoying advertising they have on their site when you first click).  I sure would love to hear from you if you grab this template.

Thank you and don't forget to stop by Sarah's shop to pick up her goodies for half off!

Thanks for the recognition... here is a free template...

Faith Sisters recognized my "Mommy's Little Cowboy" layout on their Made Ya Look Monday blog post last Monday.  I decided to make that layout into a template.  It uses a couple of my favorite scrapping techniques white space and blocking.  If you like those techniques or if you want to try them then go ahead and grab the template and have fun.
I already showed you the layout a few posts back, but first
Here is the layout once again...

I used Buckeroo Blues by Teri Thing-o-my-jigs from GingerScraps

Lots to celebrate...POST #100! My baby turns one year old! A free Template

Hello my blogging world friends.  I noticed not long ago that I was on post #99, so that means that this post will be my one hundredth blog post.  Yipee.  Since you have all endured all my wordy ways I am going to say thanks by giving you a free template!  You can find the template at the bottom of this post.  First I want to tell you something.

See this sweet baby?
He is my youngest.  He just turned one year old yesterday.  I don't know where the time went.  How can it be one year already?!!
How did I go from this... (about 10 hours before he was born)
To This...   (one day old)

and now to this...

It has been one sweet year with him!  He has definitely been a blessing!

I found some really cute photos of him that I took a few months ago. He was wearing a onesie that said "Howdy Partner," so I gave him a cowboy hat and grabbed the camera.

I found a really cool kit at GingerScraps called Buckaroo Blues by Teri's Thing-o-My Jigs Designs . It had the right amount of grunge and the right amount of cute to be a great fit for my photos

Here is the layout I scrapped
He is definitely Mommy's Little Cowboy!  LOL!

Ok on to the free template...
Here is the preview of the template I made for you

It was based on this layout

Credits:
Simple Remembrance by Charlize Creations (FPD Guest)
Foliage from Lush by Siamese Studio
Baking Cookies Paper Pack by Michelle Batton (great card stock!)
Alpha from May Playgroup Alpha by Jennilyn Designs

I made that layout for a challenge at FPD about layering on papers in a layout.  If you like the layered paper look than you will probably like that template.  I included a PNG file and a TIFF file in the download as well as the PSD!  Everyone should be able to play with this one!  When you leave your comment let me know what file you prefer.  PLEASE leave a comment here on my blog if you take the template.  I'd prefer a comment here over one on 4shared.  When I read your comments it seriously makes me want to get working on something else to give away, so know even the littlest of thanks goes a long way.

Click HERE to download the template

Anyway thanks for hanging in there with me for 100 posts!  Enjoy the template!
